How great design got
a grant application
noticed

Translating the THRIVE study into a simple, straightforward graphic.

Designing a world-class medical study is complicated. Getting it selected for grant funding is even more difficult. But imagine trying to translate all that complexity and nuance into a simple, straightforward graphic that clearly communicates the potential for dramatic upsides in patient experience AND fits comfortably in a 4”x6” box. Even for an accomplished team of researchers and physicians, that can get tricky.

This task was top of mind for Dr. Sachin Kheterpal and his team; After months of diligent work on their THRIVE study grant application, they had reached a crucial stage: They had been invited to submit a full grant proposal. Eager to make the best possible impact with the selection committee, the team engaged WTW Creative to lend a critical eye to their self-created visual aids in an effort to elegantly translate their vision for the study into an easily digestible format.

WTW reworked several graphics for clarity, using regular iterative feedback from the THRIVE team to inform design decisions while ensuring the content continued to shine. Bold graphics and layout changes drew the reader’s eye while highlighting the importance of the patient experience. Icons were reworked for a clean, professional, look. The color scheme was unified throughout the document, guiding the audience through the highly detailed presentation.

A unified color palette added consistency across a suite of graphics for the grant application.

Several small changes can add up, just as several researchers can combine their expertise to push the boundaries of medical knowledge. This project resulted in beautiful graphics that WTW was proud to deliver to the client. Even more exciting, WTW recently learned that the THRIVE study was approved for a fully funded contract from PCORI, meaning this groundbreaking study will have the opportunity to generate meaningful improvements in patient experience soon.
